A mutual exchange is where you effectively ‘swap’ homes with another tenant, giving you control and increasing your chances of finding a home of your choice.  The tenant you swap with can be from another housing association or local authority.  Each landlord has to grant permission, subject to their exchange policy.

We participate in a Mutual Exchange list with East Lothian Council and other local housing associations available to anyone seeking to swap their home with another tenant called East Lothian X-Changes.

To submit an exchange application, you will need to complete a form.

Applying for a mutual exchange

When you have found someone to exchange with, Homes for Life must agree to this swap before you move. If the other tenant has a different landlord to you then both tenants need to complete mutual exchange application forms and the other landlord must also agree to the swap.

To submit an exchange application, you will need to complete this form and meet Homes for Life's conditions.

Once you apply, you will receive a decision within 28 days.
